Salt Water Fishing Gear What Do You Need For A Trip

If you're invited on a salt water fishing trip you need to have the correct salt water fishing tackle. With the right gear, you'll enjoy the trip even more.

So what is fishing tackle?

It's not just the basics of rod, reel, line, and bait or even rod stands. But when you're salt water fishing you need safety equipment and personal gear as well.

On the water the glare from the sun and sea means your eyes need protection from the sun's UV rays. You also want to be able to see your fish when you catch them. And squinting doesn't help on the water. You'll need a good pair of sunglasses with UVA and UVB protection preferably polarized for the best view. Also don't forget the sunscreen. Nothing's worse than coming in from a great day and then not being able to move that night or the next day from sunburn.

Depending on who you go with on your salt-water fishing adventure, you may need to provide your own live bait and fishing lure. If you're unsure check with your host or a local tackle shop.

The local tackle shop can give you lots of great information as to what gear will work best in a particular location. Also check and see what fishing licenses you'll need prior to your adventure. The local tackle shop or sporting goods store will have the information. In many states you can also pick up your license at the same time.

Be prepared with the equipment you need to buy or borrow before your salt-water fishing adventure. You'll have a great day either on the shore or on the water. So prepare to have a great time and some great salt water fishing.

Saltwater Fishing Gear Terms You Need To Know

Getting the right saltwater fishing rod is important as you want a rod to hold up when you’re reeling in your big one. The options on the market are unlimited or limited as to your wallet and desire. When you get a rod you want one to hold up until you’re ready to upgrade to another rod or happy enough to stay with the one you have.

Your saltwater rod has to withstand the additional weight of the fish and that aggressiveness of the fish like marlin or tuna. You truly get what you pay for in rods. A cheap rod is no bargain. You want to match the rod for your skill level, how you plan to use the rod and your preferences.

There are a couple of terms you need to know before you buy.

Action

The rod bends or deflects when pressure is applied to the tip. This motion is called action. Fast action rods are used for worm and jig fishing. Medium action offer more casting distance but still have good responsiveness built in.

Power

The power of the rod is the ability of the rod to lift weight. It’s measured from the tip of the rod. A high or heavier power rod is good for offshore trolling. This way the rod won’t break or snap when you have a bigger fish on the line. Your line weight and power are closely aligned.

Responsiveness

When you talk about power, responsiveness is also a consideration. A high power rod is less responsiveness. When you’re casting you’d want a highly responsive rod as it can improve your casting accuracy.
